Two articles, Pre-Columbian crystal and vase from the Vicus culture, Peru

 Cristal Précolombien  -I-  Pre-colombian crystal

Important rock crystal object 3,2inch high by 1.6inch wide.

 cristal_precolombien_1

I acquired this object in a small lot of pre-Columbian objects, more than twenty years ago, at the end of the 90s, at auction, it was an estate put up for sale without a catalogue, as was often the case at Drouot, Live and the internet did not exist, only being present in the room allowed you to see objects and bid. The three objects acquired that day were authentic including a Taino terracotta cup.

The typology of this crystal object seems close to the Mezcala style of Mexico -1300 to -300 BC, some statuettes also have feet (left photo below) but the load carried on the character's back is not very conventional, it could also be a Mixtec object (Mexico IX-XV° AD) or like the one for sale (photo above), a Canastero representation of the Calima Culture of Colombia (-1000/+200), the head is quite similar, on the other hand I have not found anything similar for this last culture, I think that the expert did not have the knowledge concerning the object for sale above, lot 82.

It could also be a creation of popular art from the last century, based on Mezcala, a worker carrying a bag on his back and belted on his head, so many hypothesis do not allow to catalog this crystal rock statuette, nor even to know if it meets precise criteria of a culture, photo above in the middle, I made a mix of two statuettes given for different cultures.

I had entrusted the object to an archaeologist friend, Patrice Lecoq, a specialist in pre-Columbian Andean art, who has worked on archaeological sites in South America for a long time. He had submitted photos to his counterparts at the Musée de l'Homme, without the object in person and without a thorough examination. I had received in return a handwritten letter, with a somewhat strange and succinct conclusion, but which does not surprise me coming from museum archaeologists, saying that the object was certainly fake because it was much too rare, without however specifying the culture to which he could have belonged. I would like to point out that the word "rare" is a bit overrated, other pre-Columbian crystal objects have been found and in auction rooms small Roman objects are often found that are perfectly authentic and have reasonable estimates. Concerning my object, I would never have had a valid answer,  although I lean towards a modern artefact.

Despite the scratches that do not appear parallel—though others, conversely, do seem so when viewed under a magnifying glass at certain angles of light—microscopic examination would confirm this.

A statuette that is reminiscent of the myth of crystal skulls, which are supposedly German copies from the end of the 19th century. The belief of visitors from beyond the Earth is hard to believe, especially with the (recent) Indian mythology of the 13 crystal skulls, for example, this "astronaut" in rock crystal. If this object is pre-Columbian because I have not found any traces of it except on the planete-cristal.net site and the link to the museum mentioned in the text, qualifies this statuette differently. It would seem that it represents a ball player, a tlachtli game practiced by pre-Columbian cultures in Mexico -1200/-600, below are two representations in terracotta. Concerning the description given for the "astronaut", here is the text word for word on the planet-cristal merchant site, which is far from being scientific:

"A statuette in rock crystal mineral named "Crystal Astronaut" was found in the United States. We do not know where and when it happened, but it is now in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, USA. What surprised many archaeologists about the artifact, and in principle, everyone? First of all, the age of the figure is estimated at 3-4 thousand years; this was the minimum when it was created, and no one knows where it was created. But the most striking thing is that the figurine looks very much like an astronaut. Although many do not agree with this, but if you look closely, you can really see something that looks like an astronaut, but without the basic equipment. Finally, the last thing is the processing of rock crystal. No one hides the fact that the artifact is three thousand years old, but at the same time, scientists are not embarrassed by the question of how in such a distant past one could cut rock crystal and create a figure from this natural mineral? But this is not the only so-called spaceman found in ancient figurines and writings. Archaeologists have already found a few artifacts that do not fit the story. Thousands of years ago, could people know the models of modern astronauts, or did they already exist then? Unfortunately, there is no answer to this question, but such discoveries are not so rare."

Oaxaca Valley in Mexico, Mixtec culture, Late Monte Albán period (800-1519) This is one of the most emblematic pieces of Tomb 7 of the site due to its rarity and the technical difficulty associated with obtaining its exceptional finish. The crystal was polished by rubbing the surface in circular movements with abrasive sand.

II - VICUS

(objets collection personnelle - personal collection objects)

Vicus culture, North Peru -500/+500: The richness and the diversity of its art, discovered about the years 1960 only at the time of the clandestine plundering of hundreds of tombs, let suppose two distinct origins, one perhaps in Ecuador, the other local one. The ceramic production Vicús testifies indeed to two traditions stylistics which, although both represented in the same funerary and thus more or less contemporary contexts, are entirely different.

Strange characters, we can see a female with chest holding a bowl, the other is certainly the male but they have animal heads with big ears. Maybe the potion they're brewing is hallucinogenic and brings about a shamanic transformation.

Vicus - colocynth vase with wave decor

Vicús-Vicús period, near to the Ecuadorian styles, It is distinguished by its rough-looking ceramics, where the absence of proportion of human or animal figurations, the contempt of the natural models, are combined with an invoice often not very neat and simple forms; one finds there especially representations of characters or animals coarsely modelled, decorated by a smoking into negative raised white painting.

Whistling vases, Peru Vicus intermediate -200/+100

I have 4 whistling vases from the Vicus period (anthropomorphic and birds) and none emits the same sound. According to an explanation and demonstration carried out by an amateur, they were partly filled with water in order to modulate different animal sounds, like calls but cultish.
