This article relates to a hypothesis that I wish to present on a very particular installation of stalagmites, attributed to Neanderthals and dated 176,500 years ago, inside a cave in Bruniquel, located in Tarn-et-Garonne. This is not a work of a scientific report nor a thesis, but of a popular article. My reflections are based on CNRS reports, scientific analyzes of the installation and the report "Neanderthal, the mystery of the Bruniquel cave" produced by Luc-Henri Fage in 2019. My study sources for prehistory come from writings from the CNRS, from Paleo, Revue d'archéologie préhistoire, from bulletins of the French prehistoric society, from Hal INRAP and from numerous books and articles including those by André Leroi-Gourhan. (In the photo, scientific surveys of the Neanderthals installation in aerial view that I simply oriented and transferred in drawing of the arranged stalagmites).

Neanderthal man or Neanderthal is a species of the Homo branch which appeared approximately 430,000 years ago and which became extinct 30,000 years ago. It lived in the northern hemisphere from Europe to Asia and rubbed shoulders with Homo Sapiens who arrived in Europe 45,000 years ago. The first Neanderthal fossil studied was found in Germany in the Nander valley in 1856. In 1908 near Chapelle-aux-Saints in Corrèze, the Bouyssonie brothers unearthed an almost complete skeleton, dated around -50,000 years ago, as well as the first referenced burial of Neanderthal man and in 1909, Denis Peyrony, a French prehistorian and creator of the National Museum of Prehistory of Eyzies-de-Tayac, discovered during excavations of the site of Ferrassie in Dordogne, another skeleton dated 47,000 years old, these discoveries revealed practices funerals introducing a beginning of belief, tradition and symbolic behavior.

A few decades ago, it was considered a primitive being, but this image is changing with recent discoveries. He is attributed with cave art as the author of representations in the La Pasiega cave in Spain, in 2012 these were dated to 64,800 years old via the Uranium-Thorium (U-Th) method (Dirk Hoffmann-Institut Max Planck) or objects from the Châtelperronian, a pivotal period of the Paleolithic around 40,000 years ago, with the objects discovered (photos) in the "Grotte du Renne" at Arcy-sur-Cure in Yonne (Max Planck Institute), The Châtelperronian culture was first attributed to Homo Sapiens before being attributed to Neanderthals, but recently there has been controversy, see the Neanderthal skeleton discovered in a layer of Châtelperron in Saint-Césaire, in Charente-Maritime.

These last years have seen a craze for wanting to rehabilitate our cousin, part of his genes are still present in modern man, through conferences, reports and books, we know him to be sensitive, intelligent with qualities as a musician and as a herbalist, but paradoxically, the scientific world is still very divided regarding the artistic faculties of Neanderthals and dating analyses, particularly those carried out with the U-Th method on cave art, are controversial.

A cave that raises new questions about Neanderthals.

In May 2016, a team of Franco-Belgian archaeologists,  mission led by Sophie Verheyden, paleoclimatologist, Jacques Jaubert, prehistorian, and Dominique Genty of the CNRS, publishes in the journal Nature their work concerning a specific arrangement of 400 stalagmites, inside a cave in Bruniquel, in Tarn-et-Garonne, dated - 176,500 years ago, that questions our assumptions about Neanderthals and sets back the appropriation by humans of the underground world by 130,000 years.

Indeed, for these scientists, this major discovery revolutionizes the understanding of Prehistory because it shows that from that time on, man has, it seems, sought to organize himself according to his way of life and his beliefs. The research carried out, however, dont allow us to construct new theories as to the purposes of this spatial organization, other than being the foundations of a camp, it could perhaps obey symbolic concerns, a hypothesis which will be briefly taken up and mentioned in the report: "Neanderthal and the mystery of the Bruniquel cave" produced by Luc-Henri Fage in 2019.

These somewhat contradictory data encourage me to present my own hypotheses which go against established dogmas, but which can be explained by the singularities of this installation. We can, in fact, wonder what could have encouraged prehistoric men to come together to carry out such an “architectural” project in the center of a cave. Let us emphasize, however, that my reflection only concerns the possible meaning that this organization of space could have, and does not include in detail all the scientific data concerning it. 1.

The location of this installation of stalagmites is located, with cadastral precision, 300 m from the entrance to the cave, in the center of a vast room of 800m², itself located in the middle of the cave. The location of the construction had to be chosen wisely, It must have been "fairly easy" for humans to access, as bear and deer footprints have been discovered in another part of the cave.

Archaeological research also made it possible to locate 18 ancient hearths, located in various organized points of the installation, which affected the calcite supports. Analyzes of combustion residues show bone remains whose combustion must have allowed longitude of lighting. Partially dismantled, were they used as benchmarks for the construction? This installation was in total darkness and perhaps only at times of its "use" was light deliberately distributed in these chosen locations.

2 - Some hypotheses regarding the arrangement of Bruniquel's stalagmites

A. A domestic spatial arrangement?

The arrangement of the stalagmites is difficult to understand today, in particular because of their age, and the evolution of man's way of thinking since prehistory. Several hypotheses are possible as to the role he could have played. It could be, for example, the remains left by an ancient housing structure, using stalagmites as posts to support an ephemeral frame, made of animal skins, to protect the occupants, comparable to a tent, although this example seems to be a recent Neanderthal habitat design, having sometimes cohabited with Sapiens, difficult to compare with the customs of a Neanderthal more than 120,000 years his senior. The oval and the circle could also correspond to a certain arrangement of space, to separate domestic activities or refer to more ritualistic conceptions, all the more difficult to understand as we do not know whether this arrangement corresponds to one or more occupation phases. It can also be the result of various activities, throughout the year, by one or more groups of men, meeting when hunting game, or during the cold seasons, it seems that these men ventured into this cave from a camp set up at the entrance of the latter. The idea of a water retention basin has also been put forward, and these are all hypotheses to be analyzed.

Hypothesis of a camp: In general, during the Paleolithic, camps were built under rock shelters or at the entrance to caves, but not inside them. The shape of the remains of hut foundations discovered is often elliptical and their diameters are between 13 and 23ft. For example, on the right in the photo below, the remains of the Tibava camp, in Slovakia, oval structure measuring 17x9.8ft dating from the Aurignacian period, homo sapiens (pages taken from the illustrated encyclopedia of prehistoric man, by Doc Jan Jelinek, Gründ editions), this camp presents three hearths arranged in a triangle, partially filled with stones, two central post holes, as well as two piles of stones at the ends, which according to a first hypothesis could have been vestiges of the construction, before the idea of reinforcements for the poles supporting the roof (see photo of the reconstruction).

What about the construction of Bruniquel? The design of the Bruniquel structure seems to meet the criteria of dimensions and shapes of the foundations of the discovered huts. Part of the large oval is four layers of stalagmites high, some supported with wedges of stalagmite sections and "clay pellets", perhaps this pile could have served as a buttress for the frame of a hut, like that of Molodova, in Ukraine (on the right in the photo above and Inrap link) Molodova hutt; but the Bruniquel layout has a small additional structure, circular in shape and contiguous to the large one. There are also no holes intended to receive posts, nor remains of hunting or tools and its location in the center of a cave is not conventional, moreover, this construction is entirely surrounded and closed, no comparison possible with scientific discoveries. At the Tibava site, three central hearths are mentioned, partially filled with stones. At Bruniquel, these are two accumulation structures, also showing traces of burning. However, other hearths were strangely located on the very perimeter of the structure. Why and what was their purpose? Currently, no bivouac remains have been discovered, and the protection of the archaeological site does not allow for invasive "cleaning" to remove the layer of sediment.

Near the current entrance to the cave, in the Bauges room, a more logical place to establish a camp, what could be the remains of a Middle Paleolithic living space have been unearthed: notched bones, cores and traces of combustion. One could imagine that Neanderthals left on an expedition from this camp, if it existed during the construction of the installation, to carry out their project in the center of the cave, the short distance of 300 meters allowing for round trips.

Could climate changes or rising water levels have affected the site? As he mentioned, for the current period, in the scientific report linked opposite scientific report, "The constraints of taphonomy (science of the laws of burial) are not in retreat at Bruniquel, and we regularly see concretions of calcite, coatings accumulating or interfering clayey and/or stagnant water in an almost always saturated water environment. By certain aspects and all things considered, notably the time of access to the study site, we are sometimes no longer very far from underwater or underwater archeology ." At the time of construction, was the condition somewhat similar? There is a strong chance given the materials used, but perhaps there was a period when the humidity was lower, we would need to have more details on the findings established by  paleoclimatology, otherwise we might doubt whether poor environmental conditions are conducive to establishing a camp.

Hypothesis of protection of the installation against the surrounding water: The two parts of the installation are each formed by a continuous enclosure of stalagmites. These enclosures, often no higher than a lying stalagmite, were perhaps reinforced with clay, for the purpose of insulation against surrounding water, clay which would have disappeared following flooding of the cavity; but the photo above shows stalagmites still covered with clay (unless deposited later) and there are prints of bears and deer in another part of the cave, the Bear Paw, as well as a fingerprint, if these footprints are from the same period as the construction, they would rule out the idea of a significant subsequent submersion. On the other hand, the presence of "recent" stalagmites within the installation implies the constant presence of water in this part, the hypothesis of a watertight enclosure therefore seems to be ruled out. And why would we have built two protective enclosures, instead of just one or simply not having set up camp in a "less humid" part of the cavity?

Hypothesis of basins, conversely, these structures could have contained the water, instead of protecting themselves against it, a sort of basin or small water retention dam, but here again, we are faced with the problem of waterproofing. Part of the low wall of the large construction is four layers of stalagmites high, as if to compensate for a difference in ground level, but from the photos, this does not seem to be the case, the water stagnates there at a homogeneous level. Perhaps this pile of stalagmites could have served as a buttress for the frame of a hut, like that of Molodova, in Ukraine (Inrap link) Molodova hutt, but no vestige of structure has been discovered. The hypothesis of basins does not seem to be suitable either and what would have been the role of the two central structures, in the middle of the great construction and having lit fires thereAnd what would have been the purpose of having water retention basins in a dark cave in the vicinity of the Aveyron river?

About clay: It would also have been necessary for the Neanderthal man of these early hours to have been aware of the insulating properties of clay and to have already used it in this context, no concrete proof has been established. That he found on site in sufficient quantity of clay to seal his installation, but there does not seem to be on the site of place of extraction of clay, without certainty. Strangely, two rows of clay pellets seem to have been thrown on the walls of the ceiling of the cave, can we deduce a ritual act or a simple game, no one knows? for information on this subject, "in 1992, Michel Girard picked up a ball of kneaded clay from the floor of the Cosquer cave (Clottes et al. 2005, p. 191-192), shaped by an adult hand, should we really see in this ball the vestige of a very ancient ritual? (extract from the rituals of decorated caves...Romain Pigeaud USM 103-UMR 5198 of the CNRS).

If the hypotheses of a campsite or a basin cannot be accepted, what then could this mysterious yet elaborate structure be? Turning to another useful engineering feat in those distant times is unlikely, even though such a project required mastery of portable lighting and, on the construction site, site surveying, the selection of building materials, and the logistics of their cutting and orderly assembly. We can observe that there are far too many stalagmites for it to be a simple temporary structure. These are concepts of engineering and architecture that, logically, did not arise spontaneously, but certainly stemmed from earlier foundations. Such a project required communication between individuals that could not have relied solely on sign language; it is highly probable that Homo sapiens did not have a monopoly on speech.

176,500 years ago, this advanced collective project brought together individuals from a community, both socially and culturally, around a shared interest. Prehistory has taught us that chipped tools followed a linear evolution, like the hand axe; the same must be true for domestic, social, and even spiritual life. Therefore, we should not overlook how Neanderthals expressed it. Everything that humans have created at any point in their lives to improve their existence has not been abandoned, and all civilizations, past and present, are based on the same ancestral foundations. The needs of Neanderthals were likely not very different from those that Homo sapiens may have had.

According to Myriam Philibert, prehistoric archaeologist, "the expression opens up dizzying perspectives, because no one knows where to look for its source anymore. Should we turn to later archaic traditions? All that they leave of fundamental, of exemplary, unique, irreplaceable belongs to this fund...It is important to better understand where to look for the source of the primordial tradition and whether there exists really a rational and scientific myth of the lost word?".

B- Could Bruniquel's installation be a place of worship ?

Sima de los Huesos (Hollow of Bones), in the Burgos region of Spain, is a 430,000-year-old Paleolithic site located in a 14-meter-deep shaft created by an underground river. This site has since yielded a large quantity of fossils belonging to at least 28 individuals believed to be close descendants of the common ancestor of Denisovans and Neanderthals. After last analysis, archaeologists have concluded that this site served as a burial ground, where individuals would deposit their dead in this pit. A biface, considered a ritual tool and named Excalibur, was discovered there, introducing the idea, 255,000 years before the Bruniquel settlement, of compassion and social life with a "religious" element, considering the center of the Earth as a sacred place.

Therefore, the Bruniquel installation could be a place of worship, given its location in the center of the cave, the hypotheses of its design remaining open but unverifiable, like that of a kind of cosmography, the sun with the oval, the moon with the small circle and the constellation with the two rows of clay balls stuck to the ceiling. But a priori, an alignment of stones or stalagmites is not a unique phenomenon, and what if the design had followed a linear evolution?

"On the other hand, such an exceptional event as the stone circle in Oblazowa Cave in Poland (Valde-Nowak 2003), with drilled fox teeth, an ivory boomerang, and a human phalanx and phalanx at the center of the structure, may be just the latest manifestation of a regular ritual. Even if this seems surprising and purely speculative, we must consider the hypothesis that there may have been other stone circles before, which were then destroyed to build a new one."

And if the design had followed a linear evolution?  the study of the alignments of broken concretions in the Saint-Marcel cave (Ardèche) indicates that around 8,000 years ago, human groups traveled 1.5 to 3 km underground to move several hundred concretions (stalagmites/stalactites) and assemble them. This is the first time that researchers have managed to highlight this type of development so far from a natural entrance. Vers une représentation ? - Towards an entity representation?

Parenthesis with Aboriginal mythology. Aboriginal cultures are based on nature, the landscapes and topography that surround them. A spiritual relationship links human beings, plants, animals, stars and sacred sites. They have a similarity in the notion of “dream time”, often interpreted as the time of the creation of the World, the process by which the World came into being. In the Dream, there is no clear distinction between men and animals and some spirits are capable of taking human or animal form at will, a notion of shamanism found in Paleolithic representations.

These “legends” have been transmitted by ancestors since time immemorial, one of the myths, that of the “rainbow serpent” living in the deepest Australian waters and descending to Earth from the Milky Way, it is revealed under the forms a rainbow when it enters water or rain. It is responsible for shaping landscapes, has the ability to make rain fall, heal or annihilate, another myth, that of the Great Barrier Reef, mentions the facts of an environmental situation from 10,000 years ago years old, however, today completely disappeared.

The Narwala Gabarnmang rock shelter in Australia has been occupied for 45,000 years and its vast ceiling is decorated with prehistoric paintings, some of which are still found in sacred Aboriginal art. The transmission of Aboriginal speech seems to have spanned the ages, perhaps the microcosm of Neanderthal man was also unique and Bruniquel's installation a sacred place, first fruits of decorated caves.

Towards another hypothesis: In the photo below, on the right, a rock representation of Wandjina, considered the supreme creator, at the origin of the earth and everything it contains, its graphics and its function introduce the following hypothesis.

Hypothesis of a geoglyph (large pattern on the ground),

Still in the hypothesis of a place of worship, but an idea of this more hazardous conception, I am well aware, because it implies that our distant ancestor would have shared the same way of thinking as ours and considered graphic representation, due to its dimensions, the structure is perfectly visible on the ground as a whole.

Visual observation: Thus, viewed from above, using the measurements below, the arrangement of the stalagmites appears to outline a stylized, frontal human face, Neanderthals were still primitive designers. The large oval A for the head with an open mouth represented by the small circle B, the eyes materialized by the two central and symmetrical structures of accumulations, D-E, implanted in the middle of the large oval, the external and symmetrical concentrations on each side of the large oval, C-F, could mean the ears, the large stalagmite above A' the nose, and an accumulation of several rows of stalagmites on a high part of the oval the hair, or at least, one of the essential points defined by Neanderthal man and all these supposed points are coupled with the locations of the dismantled hearths (in orange on the photo on the right below) which would support the idea of vital elements (eyes, ears, mouth and skull).

The very location of the structure, in the center of the cave, could have been chosen by Neanderthals as the most suitable place, closest to the Earth's core, to establish a speaking, faceted entity for the purpose of communication. This is, of course, a working hypothesis based on visual observations, but it is a human construction, not a shape in a rock or a cloud; we cannot speak of pareidolia here and this hypothesis is not so far-fetched in light of the observations that follow.

Comparisons with representations, certainly much more recent, of divinities, linked in particular to the mother goddess or the goddess of the earth, in other parts of the world, leave doubt as to the meaning of the arrangement of stalagmites of the Bruniquel cave. Thus, in the Andes (a region certainly a little far from Europe, and unknown until its discovery in the 15th century) the mother goddess, Pachamama is sometimes represented on the ground by a stylized face with an open mouth and round (photo below). But is it a coincidence or is this representation the result of a way of thinking inherited from our distant ancestors?

Still in this part of the world, in Peru in the Nazca region, around 2,000 years ago and for centuries afterward, people etched large-scale representations directly into the ground. Some are only visible from the air. These geoglyphs of Nazca, the figurative geoglyphs, average 90 meters in length, and some are recognizable even from the ground. Their meaning remains a mystery, perhaps they are like ritual tattoos made on the Earth which humanize it. They represent geometric shapes, figures, and a variety of animals from the surrounding regions: from the rainforest with the monkey or the spider, from the Altiplano or the Andes Mountains with the condor, or from the sea with the pelican and the whale, as if to recreate a concentration of resources and hope for agricultural and maritime prosperity. The numerous broken pottery pieces found on the site may have contained water offered to the earth, with the expectation that the same product would be given back, given that this region has experienced long periods of drought. Communication with the Earth may have taken place through a representation similar to that found at Bruniquel.

If the representation of Bruniquel turns out to be a geoglyph, could we could also see, in the graphic design of the construction of Bruniquel, similarities with this ghostly representation (photo below)? Drawn in the Font-de-Gaume cave, in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, in Dordogne, occupied throughout the Upper Paleolithic period from -35,000 years ago.

The human representation of the face is not something unknown in the Paleolithic, Font de Gaume, Rouffignac, the "ghosts" of Combarelles or Marsoullas in Haute-Garonne (photos below of Leroi-Gourhan). All these last representations are of Homo-Sapiens, but the latter rubbed shoulders with Neanderthal Man for at least 15,000 years and they surely exchanged their knowledge, beliefs and ways of life, we are unable nowadays to know what is the part brought by one or the other, an affirmation would be a lie. For memory, Homo Sapiens did not create anything figurative on his continent of origin before the Holocene, nor before his arrival on the European or Asian continent.

To support a possible capacity that Neanderthal Man would have had to represent in figurative and reinforce the idea of the representation of an entity at Bruniquel, to follow :

-Some discoveries highlighting the cognitive abilities of Neanderthal man (-3-).

-A Mousterian artifact, dated to -76,000 years, mask of Roche-Cotard, recognized before a colloquium of scientists as a probable human facial representation (photo below) (-3-).

-The study of a Mousterian scraper with engraved cortex (second photo), on this last representation, in profile, we find the importance of certain parts that I mentioned for the installation of Bruniquel (-4-).

A structure dating back 476,000 years attributed to the ancestor of Neanderthal

Zambia : In 2019, scientists from Aberystwyth University discovered the world's oldest known wooden structure, dated at least 476,000 years old, near a river between Zambia and Tanzania. Intelligent construction is the work of a species predating Homo Sapiens, Homo heidelbergensis. The results were published in the journal Nature.

For archaeologist Larry Barham, (British University of Liverpool) first author of the study published in Nature "these hominids used their intelligence to transform their environment in order to make their lives easier, if only by making a plate -shape for sitting by the river”. He adds “This is a disruptive discovery, I would never have thought that before Homo sapiens, an ancestor would have had the capacity to plan something like this. " and the prehistorian Sophie Archambault de Beaune (Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3) indicates "The fact that they were able to work wood on a large scale presupposes cognitive abilities such as planning, visualizing the finished product before its design, moving the objects mentally in space…” (Hominids 09-22-2023). Homo heidelbergensis would be the supposed ancestor of Neanderthal man,the beginnings of engineering ?

Neanderthals chimist already used birch bark and softwood sap to make glue. The scientific results making it possible to measure the complexity of a technique reveal that to produce their tar, Neanderthals had to gather a lot of information, understand certain abstract processes and be capable of causal reasoning, but also to be able to transmit this knowledge. A set of knowledge and intellectual abilities requiring numerous cognitive skills that were until now only attributed to modern humans. It is also likely that this type of technique required stronger organization within the group and, above all, more in-depth communication between individuals.

Spain, La Pasiega cave, representations of animals and unidentified figures painted on the cave wall have been dated to 64,800 years old with the Uranium-Thorium (U-Th) method (Dirk Hoffmann-Max Planck Institute) , but this dating is questioned by around forty prehistorians led by the late Randall White.

Spain, in Andalusia, In the Ardales cave, a CNRS researcher, Francesco d'Errico, analyzed the ocher, from a pattern present on a wall (photo below), as being a deposit of a pigment imported from the outside and not coming from an oxide run. of oxide, with a dating between 43,000 and 65,000 years old, the results of this study were published on June 1, 2022, in the journal Plos One, by José Ramos-Muñoz and his team of researchers. It is the same for a dating of representation in the cave of Maltravieso in the west of Spain.

If it turns out, with certainty, that these are parietal works made by Neanderthals, generally made in ocher, perhaps they are symbolic representations at the heart of a sanctuary and open Are they the path to cave art? An intermediary between the installation of the Bruniquel cave, if it turns out to be a sacred place, and the decorated caves of the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. The ocher and the symbolism of the representations make me think of the mythical world of the aborigines.

I therefore ask myself the question of the ocher colored symbols, drawn on a wall in the decorated cave of Chauvet, located in the commune of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, in Ardèche. It presents very numerous and varied representations of animals painted on its walls, dated from -37,000 years to -28,000 years, Aurignacian and Gravettian periods, the dating was carried out using several methods, with Carbon 14 on charcoal, via U-Th on the calcite of the floor, with thermoluminescence for the traces of fire on the walls.

But what about the drawings and symbols, with primitive graphics, only made with ocher (photos below), as in the Spanish caves mentioned above? The cave may have been frequented since the Middle Paleolithic by Neanderthals; it presents the whole range of artistic evolution. Of course, if a dating carried out on these symbols classifies them in the Aurignacian period or if it is proven absolutely that the ochre discovered on nearby sites, Abri des pêcheurs or Mas Aguilhon, occupied in the Aurignacian, is the one which was used to make these small drawings, my observations would no longer be relevant.

Mask of la Roche-Cotard, In 1977, it was discovered on a site in a Middle Paleolithic stratum, in Langeais in Indre-et-Loire, a work of portable art of dimensions 3.94" x 3.94", recent dating place it around 75,000 years ago, during the Mousterian period, and belonging to the Neanderthal industry. It is an assemblage of bone and flint crossing the natural cavity of a stone, the latter has undergone various sizes for shaping. Affirmatively, according to the latest analyzes by archaeologist Ana Majkic it is a figurative construction with the hypothesis of a portrait, approved by a scientific commission. It is considered one of the first artistic manifestations attributable to Neanderthal Man, the latter also traced "lines" with his fingers on the wall of the Roche-Cotard cave (photo above). This observation introduces the fact that more than 70.000 years ago, Neanderthal created a work capable of representing an entity.

Francesco d'Errico and Paul Pettitt, archaeologists, contested the symbolic nature of the object. For F. d'Errico, the block could correspond to a weight intended to stretch a skin. For P. Pettitt, the block could be a child's toy, but this does not explain the search for symmetry, in my opinion, just considering him as a toy is admitting to a Neanderthal, creative craftsman and full of empathy.

In 2023 The Roche-Cotard mask was presented as a "portrait" in a report on Arte France "Neanderthal, first artist of humanity", directed by Thibaut Marchand. In 2016, there was no hypothesis that this object was a figurative representation, only those concerning the idea of a utilitarian object were current, apart from Jean-Claude Marquet, curator, who raised the idea of a proto figurine. I had sent my observations concerning the possible representation of an entity, due to its symmetrical size, the removal of material, the well-placed inclusions and its suggestive shape, as well as comparisons with Neanderthal art that I have been making for a long time. ten years (link) Art before art, to various scientific actors, including Jean-Claude Marquet, in return I received a letter from the Ministry of Culture (below), classifying the object "without further action". Few years later, these same criteria were used, by the archaeologist Ana Majkic in collaboration with Jean-Claude Marquet, to put forward the approved idea of a figurative construction, a kind of portrait,  perhaps my hypothesis regarding the installation of Bruniquel will follow the same path.

The Mousterian industry lasted until -35,000 years in parallel with the Aurignacian and in the last millennia it was not only that of Neanderthal man but also that of Homo Sapiens, (link) Mousterian, it's sometimes difficult to attribute it to the one or the other, but we can differentiate between types of cut tools.

Superbly retouched convex scraper measuring 4.25", typical of the final Mousterian period (link) Mousterian. I understand that this period ends around -35,000 years ago and that it was also that of Homo Sapiens, but there are typologies of cut tools. Discovered in Dordogne, without a site specified during its acquisition and outside the stratigraphic layers, we cannot establish relative dating, but by comparison its typology is very close to the tools discovered on the sites of Combe Capelle and Le Moustier in Dordogne (photos below), whose industry is attributed to Neanderthal, in fact, according to these elements, we could estimate a dating between -60,000 and -35,000 years. Without details of its discovery, we can only note the state of the document, devoid of whitish patina, the object must not have remained on the surface for long, it presents under the flat part, a reddish patina, certainly due to the iron oxide, specifying its position on the ground as well as the clayey nature of the latter, the part on the cortex side is well preserved, without shocks or gaps, excluding violent digging up by plowing, the cortex shows parasitic deposits, mold. The object is made of dark gray flint, like that, among others, present in the region around Le Moustier.

The scraper has a large reserve of cortex, the surface of the latter is not flat, it seems to have engravings but it is difficult to discern them as a whole. Depending on the angle of view and the light, the engravings in the upper (A) or lower part (B) of the cortex are better seen differently, which requires a separate examination of the two parties.

We note an engraving in the shape of a circle, the roundness of which is reinforced by black traces (certainly parasitic), it is partially exposed in the lower part and surrounded between two pronounced engravings, forming a triangle. Located in the rear middle of the cortex, there is a clear and deep engraving in an arc, which can be found on the study of the lower part of the cortex and the rear external border of the cortex has been cut, to complete a rounding ( photo below).

As with cave art, the man seemed to be playing with 3D, far from our contemporary conception of the visual that we are used to appreciating immediately. All the engravings, no more, no less, form a pattern 1.77" high, which looks like a portrait or an animal, whatever the pattern, Of course, if this document dates from the end of the Mousterian period, it cannot be attributed with certainty as being a creation of Neanderthal man.

Conclusion

A lot of conditional in the understanding of this installation, if Bruniquel's installation was a place of worship or the geoplyph representation of an entity, difficult to establish in the current state of our knowledge, our hypotheses on the foundations of religions would be called into question, the decorated caves of the Paleolithic would perhaps be the heritage of a sanctuaries in the center of  cave. If it is only a domestic construction whose utility is unknown, there remains the new idea that Neanderthal Man dominated adventure in a dark environment, at least from 176,500 years ago, was capable of collective projects, therefore to communicate, and these are skills which encourage us not to omit his spirituality and the way in which he interpreted it.

The recognition of my hypothesis is not won because, during a meeting for the release of a theory, built in collaboration with French researchers from the private laboratory Paleotechnic, Xavier Landreau, researcher within the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) denounced the archaeological environment as being a "very closed environment", resistant to new ideas.

  • les Néandertaliens avaient probablement des capacités symboliques plus développées qu’on l’a longtemps cru ;
  • ils utilisaient des pigments, des objets décorés et peut-être des formes symboliques ;
